Keep It Simple
When approaching the design and publishing of your new website, it is easy to get overwhelmed and bogged down, particularly if your business is relatively new. For start-ups here in Southwest Florida, our advice to you is simple and obvious: KEEP IT SIMPLE. Many times, as we are helping small businesses get off the ground, come up with their online marketing strategy, and conceive of a brand new piece of “internet real estate,” the website itself becomes a reflection of their business plan. If their business plan is well-developed, focused, and targeted, the website is typically relatively simple to design and write. However, if a business plan is attempting to do too much, unfocused, etc., the business website becomes a reflection of that — too broad, unfocused, and attempting to accomplish too much.
Keep It Simple
What are some ways that businesses can keep it simple on their brand new websites? Here are just a few thoughts:
- Dial down the functionality. Decide upon one main piece of functionality in which you would like to invest. Keep the idea simple and easy for visitors to do, accomplish, etc. Your website MAY eventually do the colossal things that are in your head, but it is important to start small. When Amazon.com began, they did not have all of the functionality they currently have — they started small and simple, and eventually progressed to where they are now.
- Dial down the content. Sometimes, businesses believe they must state every little single detail regarding their business and how it works on their site. DON’T — I repeat — DON’T do this. Keep your language simple, and don’t become overwhelmed with too many words on your site. State what makes you unique and the main points about how you work. Don’t explain too much, because people will not read it.
- Dial down the confusion. Keep your website simple, readable, consistent in font/layout, etc. Don’t add too many graphics right off the bat. Make the message clear and concise so that when visitors arrive at your site, they know exactly who you are and what you do right away. You only have a few seconds of their attention — grab it!
