Article - Eight of the Best Video Editing Software Programs.

Digital video has never been more accessible.  With the price of digital cameras and computers coming down all the time, it is no longer the bank breaker it used to be.

There is something in all of us that makes us want to capture moments of our lives on film.  Be it for posterity, family, messages or just entertainment.  It was once the preserve of the wealthy.  Digital video cameras used to cost the earth, and video editing software wasn’t cheap either.  Add to that the fact that you needed a degree in software engineering to get it working.

Nowadays things have changed for the better.  Cameras are cheaper and easier to use, and there is plenty of information online to help you use it to the best effect.  The video editing software packages have also come a long way.  They are often much simpler to use, and MUCH cheaper, sometimes even free.  Choosing the right package for your needs isn’t difficult, but can take a lot of time to decide which is the best for what purpose.

This article, and the one that follows will check out the eight best packages out there and give you a brief overview of the pro’s and con’s of using them.  This should give you an insight into choosing one, without having to try them all first.

Most of the tools are free, and they aren’t the typical ones either.  The more mainstream tools have been discussed at length elsewhere on the internet and I’m sure you know all about them.  The ones I’m listing here are those that I personally use in different situations.
Wax

Wax is a powerful tool with a good editing suite.  It’s similar to Blender but much easier to use.  As well as great editing it also allows for great compositing and general manipulation.  It can be used as a standalone tool or integrated into other tools like Adobe Premier or Vegas.  This allows it a unique place in any movie makers toolbox.  A tool that is powerful on its own, but can be used as a plug-in with bigger tools and best of all, is free.
T@B ZS4

The oddly named T@b ZS4 is another free tool that offers a lot for a relatively small package.  It is platform independent so can be used with any operating system.  It is timeline based, as are many of the packages featured here, and works like Windows Movie Maker, only better.  It’s real strength is its ability to manipulate filters and create special effects like “green screens” and distortions.
Video Spin

Video Spin is another free tool, from video editing veterans Avid, who now own Pinnacle.  Avid are rated very highly in the video editing world because of the quality of their editing tools.  Video Spin is a repackaged copy of Pinnacle Studio with some of the more advanced functions removed.  It’s powerful and easy to use, an ideal starting point for the professional or enthusiast alike.

See you next time for more video editing tools.
