Article - Is YouTube any Good for Professional Videos?
Say online video to anyone and they will probably think YouTube. The site is synonymous with online videos, and considering their traffic every day, I’m not surprised.
We all know it’s a great place to find videos of all sorts, but is it a good medium for professional videos? The main connection in peoples mind is YouTube being somewhere to find music videos, or home movies of people doing stupid things, stunts or just being stupid. In the midst of that somewhere are the companies who offer help or tutorial videos. Then there are people like us, who use videos for promoting their business and for marketing their clients.
The site has many advantages, firstly it’s free to use, has good Google pull and carries an enormous amount of traffic. On paper that sounds like an internet marketers dream, but it isn’t completely so.
The main disadvantage is YouTube is that once you have put the video online, you lose all control over it. The site has been known to remove videos for no reason and close accounts, even when nothing seemed to be wrong. If this happens, YouTube doesn’t even have the decency to tell you why, or even communicate with you in any way.
The YouTube related videos feature can dilute the call to action or the message of the video itself. A plastic surgeon was VERY surprised at the choices of related videos to his educational discourse on breast augmentation. We ended up pulling the video and hosting it elsewhere because he found it highly inappropriate.
The analytics that YouTube has are limited to say the least. If you’re using a video for marketing purposes, you will only see the amount of views, nothing more. While it doesn’t profess to do any more, the site isn’t very marketing friendly, unless it’s their own.
The YouTube annotations are limited, even if they are cool. It would be nice to be able to add other interactive features on the site, rather than having to do them first, but you can’t have everything I guess.
For what it is, YouTube is a great video portal. If you’re planning on using it for marketing, don’t depend on it alone. Have it running in conjunction with other things to maximize exposure. There is nothing that can come even close to the amount of potential traffic that is available if you have a YouTube channel or two for your business or marketing activities, just don’t depend in it alone to make a campaign work.
