Article - Eight of the Best Video Editing Software Programs part 2
Continuing the posts on video editing software from last time. The idea is to provide a brief overview of the tools available so you can get an idea of the most suitable before having to try them yourself.
So we covered Wax, T@b ZS4 and Video Spin last time, so let’s move on to the other five.
Blender
Blender is perhaps one of the most popular free packages out there right now, and so it should be. It is a powerful editing and compositing tool that can also do modeling, create graphics, add effects and manage the sound. It is pretty much a complete package. The main problem with it is the learning curve. Because it’s a powerful thing, that can do so much, there is plenty to learn. If you don’t mind that, and want all the bells and whistles that Blender can provide, it’s the perfect tool.
Avidemux
Despite sounding suspiciously like Avid, this is a separate tool. Another free one that does almost as much as some of the paid for packages. It is also one of the most stable of the tools we discuss here. Avidemux can cut, transpose, apply filters, special effects and all sorts of other goodies to a video file. It also handles just about any file format, which is nice.
Hyperengine-Av
Hyperengine-Av is another free tool that is worth much more. It is also another complicated program with a steep learning curve. This is because it can do a great deal with a video file. It is also because it doesn’t use timelines. This offers a lot of scope for the experienced movie maker, but may seem a little overwhelming to the novice. It does allow for transitions and effects to be placed anywhere within the file, and not within the timeline framework. Hyperengine-Av is a complex but powerful tool, and is best used in conjunction with other programs.
The last two tools are a little different, but are available, and usable enough to warrant a mention here. They are Windows Movie Maker and iMovie. While not really standalone tools, they are available when buying new PC’s or Mac’s. iMovie can be bought as part f the iLife package, if you don’t already have it, but Windows Movie Maker isn’t available separately.
iMovie is a good little program. It can’t do much of what these other ones can, but for a bundled software, it’s pretty good. It is limited by not being able to apply many special effects or filters though. If you want to make a vanilla movie with no effects or fancy stuff then it will do just fine.
Windows Movie Maker is slightly more limited and can only really do the basics. It is a great place to begin your movie making career though. Again, pretty good for a bundled application, but can’t stand up to the rest of those here for features and ability.
