Common Twitter Mistakes You Need to Avoid

August 30, 2010 Social Media by Chris Melfi Share

Like a two edged sword, twitter can be a wonderful marketing tool or it can terribly ruin your brand.  Making mistakes is easy, especially if you are a newbie in twitter. However, some of these mistakes can have a monumental damage to your business.

Twitter is driven by a community. People basically use it for interpersonal interactions and some sense of involvement in a large community.  You need to align your Twitter campaign with these ideals. Failing to do so may result into more harm than good to your cause.  The biggest mistake most folks make with Twitter is ignoring how other users use Twitter.

Here are the don’ts:

i. Do not spam
Most people set up a Twitter account and then begin casting off links to their websites with this account. This is a sure way of keeping off potential followers.  While there is no sin per se in posting a link to your site here and there, you will be branded a spammer if this is all you are doing with your Twitter account. This will cause just about every one on twitter to ignore you. Don’t just go on a link firing rampage, mix it up with some joke or a great quote. Consider talking about something that happened in your day. Answering other people’s questions can also be great. You can throw in a link once you’ve done these things. Interacting with the community will make your followers click on your links when you post them.

ii. Avoid “Cold Tweeting”
How do you respond when you get a call during breakfast offering you a great auto insurance deal? Do you pay attention and carefully listen to every word the caller has to say, or do you hang up almost immediately? Just about everyone hangs up straight away, and the response to “cold tweet” is no different from the response to a cold call. Take this seriously, you are going to be IGNORED if you are responding to people you are neither following nor are following you just because they are mentioning something relevant to your niche. Doing it repeatedly will get you flagged as a spammer, and it won’t be long before your account is banned from Twitter. Do business with the followers and users that you have replied to before.

Twitter can be a great resource to your business if you do the right things the right way with it. Using it in a manner that the community perceives to be wrong can greatly harm your brand instead of helping it. Stay away from these mistakes and you will have a rewarding Twitter account.
